Not when it's done correctly. Wood is delicate and requires low-pressure cleaning with controlled techniques. High pressure causes splintering, furring and damage to the grain. We use the right pressure and angle to clean effectively whilst protecting the wood fibres. Composite decking is more durable but still requires careful handling to avoid scratching.
Yes. Grey weathering is oxidation on the wood surface. We use specialist deck cleaners and brighteners to strip away the grey layer and reveal the natural wood colour underneath. The result can be dramatic - especially on softwood like pine. We then recommend oiling or staining to protect the restored wood and prevent it turning grey again.
Stain is essentially decking oil with a tint - it still behaves like oil but adds colour on top. The choice comes down to whether you want to keep the natural look of the timber (oil) or adjust the tone (tinted oil / stain). Some decking oils also contain biocides, which help tackle deeper imperfections and protect the timber against future organic growth. After cleaning, treating the deck with a suitable oil or stain helps reduce weathering, movement and surface breakdown.
A typical domestic deck takes between two and four hours to clean depending on size, condition and access. Heavily weathered decking requiring restoration takes longer.
