Decking - Cleaning and maintenance.

Decking should be regularly cleaned and protected with oil treatment (with optional stain) to prevent rotting and organic growth build-up.

Pressure Washing - Decking can be cleaned by pressure washing, never use turbo nozzle as this will lead to damage and striking.

When cleaning wooden boards you should always follow length of the board. Flat surface cleaner is very useful for pressure washing a decking, it minimises chance of striking as well as makes the job much easier. Alternatively you can use a flat vario nozzle with wide spray pattern. Never use too high pressure on wood. When using lance / nozzle always follow length of the board cleaning in one pass from its start to end, never stop half way the board or go back and forward over just small section of full length as this will leave strikes.

Softwash  - This step isn't necessary. Never use sodium hypochlorite based products on wood. Biocide based cleaners can be used.

When using chemicals always refer to health and safety instructions and use appropriate protective equipment.

Oil - This step is important to preserve wood. We work mainly but not only on Barrettine decking oil. This product will protect the wood, repel water and additionally it contains biocide which helps prevent organic growth and rotting. You can choose the clear oil if you like the natural appearance of your decking or one of the 5 other colours available to stain the wood - light oak, natural oak, dark oak, rosewood, cedar red.

Oil prep and process - Prior to oil application make sure that your decking is well cleaned and dry (allow minimum 1 day for the moisture to evaporate after cleaning, ensure no rain is forecasted for minimum 6-8 hours after completion).

Oil can be applied with any painting brush, application pad or sprayer. For best results two coats should be applied (or more depending on condition of the wood).

Tools - oiling / staining can be easy with right tools, please refer to Osmo brush linked below.

Antislip - Barrettine also offers antislip product that can be applied as final coat, allow sufficient time after oiling (as per instructions on the label). This product can also be applied with osmo brush.
